JPA Going Green
At JPA we are committed to doing everything possible to be a good citizen of the
world and to protect our environment and conserve energy.
We are concerned about a clean water supply, making sure that the earth and our
water is not contaminated by any of our actions. We want to make sure the air we breathe is
clean and healthy and that we are good custodians of our environment. We are also concerned about
excess consumption of our resources, such as natural gas and electrical energy. We will continue to
conserve consumption of natural gas and electricity along with other petroleum-based chemicals used
in our production processes and we will do all we can to conserve our natural resources, both
renewable and non-renewable, and especially our forests.
Some of our accomplishments:
We have eliminated the use of photographic films and the chemicals used to process
them, thereby reducing the amount of hazardous material in our wastewater.
We have changed the type of printing plates used on our presses and now use plates
whose processing effluent is biodegradable and does no damage to the environment. All of our used
plates are sold to a recycling company and the aluminum material is reprocessed into other
products.
We have installed Portal (by Agfa), a software and hardware package for our
customers to use that encourages the use of "soft" or electronic proofs instead of paper proofs,
which reduces the use of paper and ink and eliminates the transportation costs. In addition, the
use of CDs and DVDs along with their packaging materials has all but been eliminated. Most old CDs
and DVDs ended their lives in the "trash".
We have significantly reduced the amount of paper wasted during the press make-ready
process via a software product called CIP4 which is the communication of ink requirement information
from our prepress to software on the printing press, which then allows the press computer to "pre-set"
ink levels so that the first sheet printed on each press form has "almost" perfect color.
We use software that reduces ink consumption by eliminating the excessive and
unnecessary use of ink.
We made a considerable investment to convert our entire printing plant to highly
efficient furnaces and air conditioners to minimize the use of fuel to heat our buildings in the
wintertime and electrical energy for cooling during the summer. This has resulted in an 80% reduction
in JPA’s consumption of natural gas. And, along these lines, as we completed remodeling of our plant we
insulated all of the exterior walls and replaced all of the old factory windows that were totally
inefficient.
We are in the process of converting the entire plant over to high efficiency lighting
systems in order to conserve electrical energy.
We adapted press chemicals that have less
than 1% VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds)
and do not emit any harmful chemicals into the air or contaminated water into our sewer system. This is
down from in excess of 20% just a few years ago. We use no alcohol and no alcohol substitute in our press
fountain solutions.
The inks that we have been buying contain both linseed and soy oils, both of which are
biological vegetable oils from renewable agricultural sources. The VOC’s in our current inks are in the
11.6% range by weight, down from in excess of 25% just a few years ago. While our inks do not contain
enough soy oil to allow the use of the "soy ink logo", our customers may use the Sun Chemicals
"Green Technology" logo. Contact your Customer Service Representative and we will send you
an eps file which you may place in your magazine.
None of the paper stock used at JPA contains wood pulp from trees harvested from
clear-cut forests. In the United States and Canada, paper companies have been involved in growing trees
especially for wood and for the manufacture of paper for years. The trees are in reality a renewable
agricultural material. For years, the reforestation rate in North America has been two seedlings planted
for every tree harvested.
Many of the papers we inventory contain 10% post consumer waste and paper with up to 30%
post-consumer waste is available from JPA. These papers do cost more to manufacture, however, and there is
an up-charge for them. We have several customers who have elected to use paper with high-content
post-consumer waste and we are most willing to help with this process if you so desire.
All of the paper waste that is generated at JPA is sold to paper recycling companies for
processing into other materials. This includes the make ready material from the press, trim shavings from
our trimmers, and paper material left over once we have finished the job. This material is remanufactured
into other paper based products.
In 2008 we spent several thousands of dollars to purchase plastic reusable pallets for
use in our plant so that we no longer purchase wooden pallets. We did this to save costs in the long term
and for the safety of our employees, but also in order to conserve on the consumption of forest products.
Our new air compressor is designed to save electricity by cycling off when there is no
demand for compressed air. This feature can save 10% of the electrical energy used to create compressed
air for our machinery.
JPA intends to continue to be the responsible choice for your printing needs.
